Let the oceanfront, gated retreat of Hilo Shangrila envelop you, with its private saltwater pool, hot tub, and covered lanai, all just a stone's throw from the peaceful Pacific. New air conditioning has been added in all bedrooms for total guest comfort. We are constantly upgrading our home with guest comfort in mind! Situated in the quiet, rural Hawaiian Paradise Park neighborhood, the home beautifully accommodates six guests.
Hilo Shangrila's airy, inviting living room and well-equipped kitchen feature soaring ceilings and a wall of glass doors to maximize ocean views and indoor-outdoor living. The home also boasts a dining space for six in full view of the ocean, an office space and additional sitting area, and a laundry area.
The master bedroom at Hilo Shangrila offers more vaulted ceilings, a king-size bed, a walk-in closet, and an ensuite bath with a walk-in shower. The welcoming guest bedroom also has high ceilings and a queen-size bed, as well as its own full bath just steps away, with a large tub and shower. The third sleeping area is adjacent to the master bedroom and has a pull out sofa.
The saltwater swimming pool has a breathtaking view of the brilliant blue Pacific. Its surrounding lanai provides the opportunity to soak up the warm Hawaiian sun or lounge in the shade. A covered hot tub is the perfect setting for enjoying cooler evenings, and a gas barbecue grill creates another option for meals at home.
This Puna-area home on the Big Island's east side allows easy access to attractions such as black-sand Kehena Beach, Pohoiki (aka Isaac Hale) Beach Park, and the Na Ala Hele hiking trail. In nearby Pahoa town, guests will find excellent seafood, Italian, Mexican and Filipino restaurants, along with a 50's-style coffee shop and a natural foods market. At the farmers' markets, take advantage of the opportunity to sample unusual local fruits (like passion fruit, star fruit, lychee, mango, and papaya); feast on a homemade crepe with bananas, chocolate and cream; try some homemade Thai noodles or salads; find a unique, hand-crafted piece from a Big Island artist; enjoy a soothing professional massage; or experience authentic Hawaiian music. If you are looking to relax, this place is it. The minute you enter Hilo Shangrila the weight of the world is lifted. We loved sitting by the pool and listening to the sounds of the ocean. The interior is very well kept and has everything you would need. We explored the entire island during our stay and loved coming “home” each afternoon to Hilo Shangrila. We encourage you to stay here!

The following maintenance issues were sent to the Concierge on Wednesday 7/19/2023: The door and window in the dining room were "frozen shut". (Confirmed by Gary) With no circulating air and no AC in that room we could not dine there comfortably.
The oven was very dirty and some pans underneath were
dirty/rusted and unusable (Confirmed by Gary with photos.)
Some knives and utensils had rust on them.
One of the microwave oven lights is out.
Gas from the grill lite once but wouldn’t light again. The second tank is rusted all over and does not look safe. The metal grill cover is loose and falling off. (No one came to assist in repairs). We had to fry our fish rather than grill it.
The hot water knob in the main shower is loose and ready to fall off.
The LG remote control for the AC in the master bedroom does not work.
We were expecting a 5 star experience but our experience was far less than that. It would be appropriate to receive a partial refund as we did not get what we paid for.

Aloha John, we really tried to provide you with the experience you expected. Our team did unfortunately fail to clean the oven prior to your check-in - a true oversight! Everything else on your list is very typical of oceanfront properties - basically anything metal or with batteries corrodes very quickly! We thought sending our handyman over to address the issues was enough but I guess not. This is noted! Most guests absolutely love Shangrila and immerse themselves in the relaxing pool, hot tub and oceanfront beauty. Our professional team ensures maintenance and cleaning are top notch, as evidenced by many high marks from guests over the years. From the moment we arrived we were amazed. The house has an unbelievable back yard and view. It is located around 30 minutes from Hilo, 40 minutes from Volcano National Park, and under 2 hours from Kona. The grounds are well kept and we couldn't have asked for a better place to stay. We would go back 100 times over! It honestly kind of ruined our stay on Oahu after we left Big Island just because of how amazing the house and island were!

This house is awesome! We spent 4 relaxing days lounging and enjoying the incredible view. Dolphins, whales, turtles, and schools of fish along with amazing sunrises and crashing waves kept us in awe. BBQ-ing and eating outside, enjoying the pool and hot tub, and comfortable beds kept us happy. Very well stocked, clean, and BEAUTIFUL. Wish we could stay longer! Management company very helpful

We had an amazing stay at Hilo Shangrila! The decor of the house definitely enhances your Island experience and the location is amazing! The ocean is literally in your backyard, making it easy to relax and fall asleep to the sound of the waves. The pool was a great size, well maintained, as well as the hot tub. The house has all the amenities you could need, making it very easy for us to cook meals. Location is perfect for exploring Hilo side of the island, including Pahoa, Waipio Valley, and Volcano National Park. Will definitely stay again!

Salt water vacations were great. They communicated well and helped us check in early. We loved the rental overall. There were 2 things that could be improved- no lights in the pool and terrible terrible mattresses on the beds.

Mahalo for your review and feedback, Lindsay! Unfortunately the pool lights are not an easy fix. Getting them working would require major construction and having the pool out of commission for quite a while and nobody wants that. We figure, all the better for night time swimming privacy ;-) This is the first time we've heard negative feedback about the beds. They are high quality mattresses, and we have had quite a bit of feedback saying they are very comfortable. Mattress firmness is such a personal preference. These beds are on the soft side, but many people do enjoy that. We're sorry they were not at your preferred level of firmness.

A completely amazing location to stay away from tourist crowds and relax. Fully ocean front on a short rocky cliff, the views in the morning with the cool breeze all day long were delightful. We could have stayed hunkered down for our entire stay, but it was hard to resist the quaint restaurants and new gourmet market (with live music in the bar) just 7 miles south.

We had a wonderful, relaxing time at this amazing home. The large lanai and pool near the ocean were where we spent most of our time. We have rented several homes on The Big Island, but this was the perfect combination of everything we needed and wanted. The manager of Salt Water Vacations texted us the first night to make sure we had arrived safely and to answer any questions that we had. The air conditioner in the second bedroom is quite loud so bring ear plugs for your best sleep.

Our 'ohana had such a special time while staying at Hilo Shangrila. There was plenty of space for all 6 of us and a newborn. The house was clean and well equipped and the property management was friendly, helpful and quick to respond. One of the highlights was sitting poolside with a cup of coffee watching the sunrise over the ocean and listening to the island wake up. My parents thanked me again and again for renting this house to honor their 50th wedding anniversary!

Overall, the home was great, incredible views, well-kept and in good condition. The only downside was that the listing did not mention the pool was unheated, which made it impossible to use during our winter visit.

I’ve been to the Big Island many times but never stayed on the Hilo side. We loved it and I wish we had stayed longer. Even though it was smack in the middle of the “rainy season”, we had only a few showers (one coolly thunderous) during our stay. We watched turtles in the waves all day long. The pool is fantastic, solar heated to a perfect temperature and the hot tub is also great. The kitchen is well-equipped and the beds are comfortable. The back screen door needs to be fixed, as well as the dishwasher top shelf. The information provided before we arrived was not update and contained some incorrect information. All in all, great place to be, great location. Would definitely rent it again.
