About
Located in the Kaloli Point sun belt on the East side of the Big Island of Hawai, House of Paddles is within earshot of the Pacific Ocean’s crashing waves. This private tropical oasis is a two-minute walk from the spectacular Puna coastline to watch sea turtles and whales (when in season)!
Please Note: This is a quiet residential neighborhood and local ordinances prohibit gatherings at licensed short term rental properties. Quiet hours are 9pm to 8am daily. Occupancy is set to 7 guests only. Please Respect Your Neighbors!
Stunning custom-built in 2005, House of Paddles features an open floor plan with vaulted ceilings. Throughout the home are exotic local hardwoods and Mexican tile. The fully equipped kitchen features custom Native Koa hardwood and Mango cabinets and a six burner gas stove with griddle. French doors open the Grand Room to a private tropical resort-style pool area with a propane grill. Observe beautiful sunrises and magical stargazing from the pool area.
There are three bedrooms and one additional sleeping area. The private Orchid Suite is separate from the main house and boasts an ensuite bathroom with private lava rock outdoor shower. Two more bedrooms are in the main part of the house. Bedroom 2 shares a full bathroom across the hall and Bedroom 3 has an ensuite bathroom. The final sleeping area is a comfortable queen size bed in our large laundry room.
House of Paddles is conveniently located 25 minutes from Hilo International Airport. Only 30 minutes to many must see attractions including Hawaii Volcanoes National Park, snorkeling beaches in Hilo, the newly renovated Poho’iki Beach Park in Kalapana and many natural wonders. Just 15 minutes to quaint Pahoa Town for fine dining, art boutiques and groceries. Only 8 minutes to Maku’u Farmer’s Market on Sundays.

We’ve stayed here twice now. It’s a beautiful home at a great location. Wonderful for a family or couples alike. One downside since the last time we stayed is that there was a new home built adjacent to it and there is little privacy on the pool areas like there used to be. My only recommendation would be to add some foliage or increase the fence height around the pool. Otherwise, it’s amazing. Would totally recommend. Very clean and in great shape.

The house is absolutely beautiful. There were missing smoke detectors and the permit to rent was out dated. The dishwasher leaked so we didn’t use it, the pool was great for the grandkids and the adults. The outdoor shower was a hit amongst all of us. The location was great and the kitchen was outstanding. Would stay again.

The house was fantastic, if a little out of the way, set in a jungle like area. We booked this for the pool but found we could not get in or out safely. The ladder was totally wrong with a long step down. We were very disappointed. Didn't like the Roku streaming TV. Missed the playoff games.

We're so sorry you had trouble with it! All of our rentals come equipped with SMART TVs. None have cable or other reception. Many streaming services do offer live broadcasts of the ball games - Amazon Prime is one example. Take good care, and safe travels!

I almost don't want to leave an honest review so nobody else will rent this place ever. This home is a beautiful oasis for your vacation. The master suite with the outdoor shower is incredible for just enough privacy. The layout of the home is perfect with roomy bedrooms and a huge living area for family. The lanai and pool were our favorites every evening after a day of adventures. Just a quick walk to the ocean. The location is in a quiet neighborhood that is a great central location to Hilo one way or Volcano Park the other way. We had lots of exploring time while staying here. This home made the second place we stayed at in Kona seem like a slum (and it was nice too).
We didn't read the instruction book well when we first got there so we missed the part about keeping food scraps in the freezer to keep bugs from getting in the trash but after we saw it, dug our food scraps out, and knew what we were doing, it was all good. Maybe a little note in the kitchen about that would be a good reminder for future guests who get too caught up in the magic of Hawaii to follow directions straight away.
We will definitely be back again and hope to be able to rent the House of Paddles. I've never stayed in a better VRBO rental.

The house had pretty much everything we needed. Loved the private backyard pool and used it every afternoon and evening. The location allows you to travel to so many day trips in all different directions on the island. The kitchen was great and the bbq very convenient too. Highly recommend you seriously check this out for a fabulous vacation getaway.

This house worked wonderfully for our family of 7! Kitchen had all the cooking utensils needed and while the house has no air conditioning, we kept cool with all the fans and by using the pool! The separate suite with the lava shower was perfect for my husband and I when we wanted to take a break from the noise in the main house! Loved using the outdoor lava shower every day. We kept the bathroom door opened all night to get the extra breeze in the room. The house is in a quiet location and we felt very safe. I would highly recommend this house. Jessica at Saltwater Vacations was always very responsive to any questions we had!

Lovely secluded home in eastern tip of Hawaii island, with easy access to Hilo and Volcano Natl Park areas. Refreshing pool for relaxing outdoors, or 30 mins to black sand beaches with great snorkeling. Well stocked kitchen and comfortable house, with separate bedroom unit, if needed. Useful washer/dryer included. Groceries and restaurants only 30 mins away. 10 min walk to lava cliffs overlooking ocean.

This is a lovely open plan home with the 2 main bedrooms and great room opening to the lanai and pool. It is about a 30 minute drive from Hilo. The house was spotless and the kitchen was very well equipped. You can walk to the ocean cliffs. The pool is a big plus. As noted in other reviews, the owner is working to provide privacy from the newly constructed house next door which overlooks the pool area. We really enjoyed our stay.

We loved the home, and the cliff views of the beautiful ocean were just a few minutes walk! We enjoyed several activities with hilo ocean adventures. We very much enjoyed our stay. The house was immaculately clean, well appointed and well supplied with everything that we needed for our stay. We enjoyed the pool on a daily basis and loved being able to walk easily to the beautiful coast. The only downside, as mentioned in a previous review, is the proximity of the two story house being built next door. Some creative screening for privacy will be required once people have moved in.

This house met our needs. It is spacious with plenty of room to gather or to spend time separately. It was clean and the kitchen was well stocked with pots and pans. The location was relatively convenient for sightseeing, etc., although traveling on the big island means lots of driving, especially to the sunny side (west) as it rains on the east side most of the time.

Place is well appointed with a full kitchen and 3.5 bedrooms (one doubles as a laundry room), plenty of pool/lanai furniture, and large doors on both sides of the home that allow for the trade winds to cool the place off in the evening and bring in the soothing sounds of the island. New construction on the poolside of the home will allow direct view of the pool from the second floor, removing much of the privacy of the pool and lanai. Owners have indicated a plan for a privacy barrier which will determine if we return. Communication was great and directions were easy. Mobile access is sporadic but the WiFi is good.

Our family loved House of Paddles! The house itself is beautiful with everything we needed. The woodwork is beautiful. The beds very comfortable. The layout of the house gave everyone space for quiet time.

We loved our experience at the House of Paddles. The house is beautiful and loved the open patio and outdoor shower. The house was well stocked, even including rain jackets which came in handy. Beautiful bedrooms and a great laundry room! We would definitely come back!! Thank you!

We had an incredible time at The House of Paddles. It was quiet and very peaceful. The house is gorgeous and the layout allowed for space together and space apart. It is a two minute walk from the ocean and we saw tons of whales throughout our stay. The kitchen had every thing we needed and the pool was perfect. Mahalo for creating such a lovely place to stay.

An absolutely beautiful home! Clean, beautiful kitchen well equipped. The semi outdoor shower was absolutely the best. Felt like you were taking a shower in some tropical movie set...my grandkids (12, 18 and 20) loved the pool and all the pool toys. Great place to stay on that side of the Big Island!

This house is wonderful! Super accommodating in almost every way. Pool was perfect. Lots of floaty toys. Fabulous seating and lots of sun.
Downfalls- pretty far from stores but not terrible. Not nearly enough towels. Had a few strange alarms go off in the house. Stove has a unnerving clicking that won’t stop sometimes.
Good definitely outweighs the bad. Yes would absolutely stay again but I would definitely bring more towels!

We ask for the correct guest count for each booking specifically so that we can leae out enough towels for everyone and there is laundry on site if you need to wash towels.
